Convert lightweight AP to autonomous AP

Managing and knowing how to configure an Autonomous AP is key part of the CCNA Wireless syllabus. What if you are like me managing an Enterprise class WLAN consisting of Wireless LAN Controllers and Lightweight APs?

In the official CCNA Wireless guide book and Cisco Configuration Guides, converting a Autonomous AP to a Lightweight one is as easy as running the following command:

archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite ftp://[FTP Server]/[Image Name]

However when you attempt to run the same command on a Lightweight AP, you will get a familiar error message…

%Invalid input detected at `^’ marker.

Remember that you have relinquish control of configuring the AP to the WLC so you will not be able to run any configuration commands on the AP hence the error message. However you can overcome this by running the debug capwap console cli command.

If you do a little digging around on the internet, you find that the command is listed on Cisco support forum, Cisco learning network and a myriad of tech blogs like this rather than on Cisco product configuration guide for some odd reason.

To recap, the full set of commands are:

debug capwap console cli
archive download-sw /force-reload /overwrite ftp://[FTP Server]/[Image Name]
